Watchdog to probe Sydney police over handling of violent anti-Herzog demonstration
Footage has surfaced showing law enforcement officers apparently striking demonstrators during a protest against the Israeli president on Monday.
An investigation into allegations of police misconduct has been launched by the New South Wales (NSW) Police watchdog following violent confrontations between officers and protesters during a demonstration against the visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission has determined that an investigation is warranted due to the significant number of complaints received regarding the police operation on Monday, citing it as being in the public interest.
Footage from the rally appears to show officers engaging in physical altercations with protesters, including punching and dragging away a group of Muslim men who were praying, with a state MP also reporting injuries.
The NSW Police Commissioner has maintained that officers exercised restraint in the face of non-compliance from protesters, despite criticism from some quarters.
As part of its inquiry, the commission will review all available evidence, including video footage, and conduct hearings before submitting a public report to the state parliament.
The protest, which drew thousands of attendees, was staged in opposition to President Herzog's visit, with some critics accusing him of inciting genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, allegations he denies.
The government's decision to extend an invitation to President Herzog, despite objections from pro-Palestinian groups, was made in the aftermath of an antisemitic incident at Bondi Beach in December, with the aim of supporting the Jewish community.
The Palestine Action Group, which organized the protest, has welcomed the investigation and called for the resignation of key officials, including Premier Chris Minns and another individual.
According to Amal Naser, the police response was disproportionate and characteristic of a "police riot," targeting peaceful protesters, and emphasized that protesting is a fundamental right, whereas genocide is a serious crime.
The Australian National Imams Council has expressed disappointment with the police conduct, stating it does not reflect the values of Australian society, and reiterating its demand for an apology.
The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network has emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the investigation, highlighting a perceived pattern of anti-Palestinian racism and the erosion of democratic freedoms.
Katie Shammas of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network has framed the issue as a broader concern, impacting not only the Palestine justice movement but also the fundamental rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
In response to the Bondi Beach incident, Premier Minns introduced restrictions on protests, and prior to President Herzog's visit, announced additional powers for police to manage major events, effectively granting them authority to restrict access to certain areas.
The protest took place shortly after a legal challenge to the major event designation was rejected, with police subsequently ordering crowds to disperse.
According to police, melees broke out after protesters were instructed to leave the area, resulting in arrests and injuries.
A total of 27 individuals were arrested during the protest, with 9 subsequently charged, while 10 police officers reported being assaulted.
The NSW Police Force has stated its intention to cooperate fully with the watchdog inquiry.
Police Minister Yasmin Catley has expressed respect for the investigation process, acknowledging the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission as a strong and independent oversight body.
Premier Minns has defended the police response, suggesting that officers were faced with an impossible situation, and cautioned against drawing conclusions based on isolated incidents.
When asked about the disruption of Muslim prayers by police, Premier Minns declined to apologize, suggesting that such actions would only be taken in the context of a riot, while another official has apologized for any offense caused.

Court rejects bid to overturn single-sex toilet rules
Critics argued that the guidelines provided for establishments, including hospitals, retail stores, and eateries, contained legal inaccuracies and were overly simplistic in nature.
A recent ruling by a High Court judge has upheld the Equality and Human Rights Commission's stance on guidance regarding toilet and changing room access for transgender individuals in public and workplace settings.

In April of the previous year, the EHRC released interim guidance, which was subsequently withdrawn six months later, stating that single-sex facilities should be restricted to individuals of the same biological sex.
According to the guidance, a transgender woman, who is biologically male but identifies as female, would be expected to utilize a gender-neutral or male facility, rather than female-designated toilets and changing rooms.
Critics argued that the EHRC's guidance for employers, including establishments like hospitals, shops, and restaurants, was flawed and oversimplified.
During the November hearing, the EHRC maintained that its temporary guidance did not infringe upon the human rights of transgender individuals.
Mr Justice Swift denied the Good Law Project's application for a judicial review, but requested further submissions from all parties to determine whether an appeal would be permitted.
The EHRC's withdrawn guidance was issued in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling in April 2025, which clarified that the terms "woman" and "sex" under the 2010 Equality Act refer to biological sex and women.
The EHRC is currently developing a comprehensive code of practice, which is under review by the government.

UAE Defeats Canada to Enhance Super 8s Qualification Chances
The United Arab Emirates boosted their slim chances of advancing to the T20 World Cup Super 8s, securing a narrow five-wicket victory over Canada, thanks in part to Aryansh Sharma’s unbeaten 74.
In a crucial match for the United Arab Emirates, Aryansh Sharma achieved his fifth T20 international half-century, contributing to the team's victory over Canada.
The Men's T20 World Cup, being held in Group D in Delhi, saw an intense competition between the two teams.
Canada's innings resulted in a total of 150-7 after 20 overs, with Harsh Thaker scoring 50 runs off 41 balls, while Junaid Siddique took 5 wickets for 35 runs.
The UAE team responded with a total of 154 runs in 19.4 overs, led by Aryansh Sharma's unbeaten 74 runs off 53 balls and Sohaib Khan's 51 runs off 29 balls, despite Bin Zafar taking 3 wickets for 14 runs.
The United Arab Emirates secured a five-wicket win over Canada, boosting their chances in the tournament.
Aryansh Sharma played a pivotal role in the UAE's win, scoring an unbeaten 74 runs to help his team overcome Canada's total.
With four overs remaining, Canada seemed poised to defend their total, but Sohaib Khan's aggressive batting reignited the UAE's chase, as he scored 17 runs off Dillon Heyliger's bowling.
In the final over, the UAE required eight runs to win, and Aryansh Sharma eased the pressure by hitting a six off Jaskaran Singh's first ball.
Sohaib Khan was dismissed after scoring a rapid 51 runs off 29 balls, including four sixes, leaving the scores level.
Muhammad Arfan then sealed the victory with two balls to spare, hitting a four off Jaskaran Singh, as Aryansh Sharma top-scored with 74 runs off 53 balls.
The UAE now stands third in Group D with two points, but they face an uphill task in their upcoming matches against full members South Africa and Afghanistan to advance to the next phase.
Although the UAE has never beaten a full member in any World Cup format, their performance in this match has given them some confidence.
Earlier in the match, Junaid Siddique achieved the best bowling figures by a UAE player in a T20 World Cup, taking 5 wickets for 35 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Harsh Thaker's 41-ball half-century, which included three sixes and two fours, provided a solid foundation for Canada's total.
Thaker and Navneet Dhaliwal shared a 58-run partnership to help Canada recover from a difficult start, before Dhaliwal was run out for 34 runs.
After Thaker fell victim to Junaid Siddique's slower ball, Canada struggled to find boundaries against the UAE's tight bowling.
Shreyas Movva made a useful contribution of 21 runs off 21 balls, but Junaid Siddique took two wickets in the final over to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in T20 internationals.
In a separate match, Zimbabwe's Brilliant Muzarabani played a key role in his team's stunning win over Australia.
