Discord introduces ID requirement for adult content access
A popular online chat platform, utilized by 200 million users on a monthly basis, has implemented a setting to automatically obscure explicit material.
In a move to restrict access to adult content, Discord will soon introduce a global age verification process, requiring users to either undergo a face scan or provide identification.

As a platform with over 200 million monthly users, Discord enables individuals to create and join communities based on shared interests, fostering a vast and diverse online environment.
The company's new safety protocols aim to ensure a teen-friendly experience by default, with restrictions in place to protect users from inappropriate content.
Building on existing age verification measures in the UK and Australia, Discord will expand its age checks to users worldwide, starting in early March, to comply with online safety regulations.
According to Savannah Badalich, Discord's policy head, the company's safety efforts are particularly crucial when it comes to protecting teenage users.
By introducing global default settings for teens, Discord is enhancing its existing safety framework, providing robust protections for young users while allowing verified adults greater flexibility.
Under the new default settings, users' access to certain content and communication features will be limited, with only verified adults able to access age-restricted communities and view unblurred sensitive material.
Additionally, users who have not completed the age verification process will not be able to view direct messages from unknown senders, further enhancing the platform's safety features.
Drew Benvie, head of social media consultancy Battenhall, views the creation of a safer online community as a positive development, acknowledging the importance of online safety measures.
However, Benvie also notes that implementing the new system may be challenging, given the platform's vast number of communities, and could potentially lead to issues.
The outcome of Discord's age verification implementation is uncertain, as it may either lead to a loss of users or attract new ones who value the platform's enhanced safety standards.
On Monday, the company announced plans to utilize "inference" tools to identify users likely to be adults, streamlining the age verification process.
According to Badalich, Discord's age inference model will analyze account information, such as tenure, device data, and activity patterns, to determine a user's likely age, eliminating the need for age verification for most adults.
The company emphasizes that it does not use private messages or message content in its age inference process, ensuring user privacy.
Users can choose to verify their age by either uploading a photo of their identification or taking a video selfie, which will be analyzed using AI to estimate their age.
Discord assures users that the information used for age verification will not be stored, and face scans will not be collected, while ID uploads will be deleted after verification is complete.
The company has implemented measures to protect user data, including the deletion of ID uploads and the non-collection of face scans, to address concerns about data privacy.
Previous warnings from privacy advocates have highlighted the potential risks associated with age verification methods, emphasizing the need for careful implementation.
In October, Discord faced criticism after a data breach potentially exposed the ID photos of approximately 70,000 users, highlighting the importance of robust data protection measures.
The announcement of Discord's new safety measures comes as the company is reportedly considering an initial public offering, as indicated by reports in early January.
By introducing a teen advisory council and default safety settings, Discord is following the lead of other social media platforms, such as Meta's Facebook and Instagram, TikTok, and Roblox.
According to Benvie, the implementation of forced age verification and safe content by default may set a precedent for other social networks, which will likely be monitoring Discord's approach closely.
In recent years, social media platforms have introduced various measures to protect teenagers and children, responding to increased pressure from lawmakers and regulatory bodies.
In 2024, Discord's CEO, Jason Citron, faced questioning at a US Senate hearing, alongside other prominent tech executives, including Mark Zuckerberg, Evan Spiegler, and Shou Chew, regarding the company's child safety measures.

GB men’s curling team suffers upset defeat to Italy
At the 2026 Winter Olympics, Great Britain’s men’s curling team mounted a comeback against Italy following a disappointing beginning, ultimately falling short in their inaugural match.
Despite a valiant comeback, Team GB ultimately fell short as Italy held their composure to secure the win in the final end.
A dismal start to the match proved costly for Team GB's men, as they suffered their first defeat of the Winter Olympics at the hands of host nation Italy, despite a spirited fightback in the packed Cortina Curling Stadium.
Following victories in their first two matches, including a win over the Swedish rink that beat them in the gold-medal match four years ago, Team GB entered their second high-profile encounter in as many days in a confident position.
However, a disastrous opening end, in which Italy stole four points, left Team GB trailing and facing an uphill battle in front of a boisterous home crowd.
The British team, currently ranked number one in the world, gradually regained their footing and managed to level the score by the ninth end.
Ultimately, Italy maintained their composure in the final end to emerge victorious, winning 9-7 and adding Team GB to their list of scalps, which already included the Swedes.
"We had to dig deep and play some solid curling, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get us over the line," Team GB lead Hammy McMillan said in an interview with BBC Sport.
With seven wins from nine round-robin matches guaranteeing a spot in the semi-finals, Team GB remains in a strong position, although fewer wins may still be sufficient to advance.
The women's team is set to take to the ice next, facing South Korea in their second match at 13:05 GMT, while the men will return to action on Saturday against the Czech Republic at the same time.
Team GB is at the forefront of curling's technological advancements.
Embracing what sets you apart can be a powerful asset, according to some athletes.

The looks of shock on the faces of Team GB's curlers told the story of a disastrous opening end.
With a stone in play, Mouat attempted a risky shot in an effort to claim two points, but it backfired, resulting in none of Team GB's stones in the house and four Italian stones in position.
However, the Scottish quartet, ranked number one in the world, quickly regained their composure and got back to their game.
The teams exchanged singles before a impressive final throw by Mouat, aided by a measurement to determine which stone was closest to the button, allowed Team GB to claim two points and narrow the gap to 5-3.
Another excellent team effort, which included a well-judged throw by Mouat, a solid sweep by Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie, and Grant Hardie's strategic expertise, forced Italy to concede a point in the fourth end, reducing the deficit to a single point at the break.
Italy blanked the sixth end and added two points in the seventh to rebuild their lead, but Team GB fought back with two points of their own, remarkably levelling the score with one end remaining after a steal.
The match came down to the final end, but Italy held their nerve to secure the win, prompting a deafening roar from the crowd.
"It's an incredible experience, and we need to get used to it," McMillan added, describing the electric atmosphere as "surreal" and "cool," more akin to a football match than a typical curling crowd.
