Former Labour communications chief suspended due to links with a sex offender
Lord Doyle has issued an apology for his previous connection to a onetime Labour councillor who pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children.
Lord Doyle, a former communications director for Sir Keir Starmer, has been suspended from the Labour Party's parliamentary group due to his past connections with Sean Morton, a convicted sex offender.

Lord Doyle has announced that he will no longer take the Labour whip and has apologized for his previous association with Morton, who was convicted of indecent child image offenses in 2017 and had served as a Labour councillor in Moray.
This development follows a report by the Sunday Times, which revealed that Lord Doyle had campaigned on behalf of Morton in 2016, after Morton was charged with possessing and distributing indecent images of children.
According to Lord Doyle, at the time of his support, Morton had maintained his innocence, both to those who knew him and in court, which led Lord Doyle to believe in his innocence.
Lord Doyle has acknowledged that he made a mistake by not withdrawing his support before the conclusion of the judicial process, and he has offered an unreserved apology for this error in judgment.
Lord Doyle stated that those who believed Morton's claims of innocence were mistaken, and he emphasized that he has never downplayed or questioned the severity of Morton's crimes, which he considers to be abhorrent.
After Morton's conviction, Lord Doyle's contact with him was limited, and he has not seen or spoken to him in years, except on a few occasions when they attended events organized by others, or when Lord Doyle checked on Morton's welfare at the request of others.
Lord Doyle, a veteran Labour strategist who previously served as the party's head of press from 1998 to 2005 and worked under Lord Blunkett and Sir Tony Blair, was appointed to the peerage by Sir Keir Starmer in December and was sworn in as a member of the House of Lords last month.
The Sunday Times initially reported on Lord Doyle's involvement with Morton's campaign in December, prompting the Conservatives to call for the disclosure of details regarding Lord Doyle's vetting process.
A Labour Party spokesperson has stated that all complaints are thoroughly assessed in accordance with the party's rules and procedures.
The party has launched an investigation, and as a result, Lord Doyle's Labour whip in the House of Lords has been withdrawn pending the outcome.
Sir Keir Starmer faced questions regarding Lord Doyle's peerage during a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party on Monday, where the prime minister rallied support for his leadership.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch wrote to Sir Keir Starmer, urging him to explain why he appointed Lord Doyle to a prestigious position despite his connection to a convicted sex offender.
This comes after the prime minister confirmed that he had appointed Lord Mandelson as the US ambassador, despite being aware of Mandelson's friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The prime minister apologized to Epstein's victims for believing Lord Mandelson's account of the extent of his relationship with Epstein, which has been revealed to be false.
Following Lord Doyle's suspension, Badenoch called on the prime minister to disclose what he knew before appointing Lord Doyle to the peerage, stating that the issue would not be dropped.
Labour has also suspended the party whip for MSP Pam Duncan-Glancy in the Scottish Parliament.

A Scottish Labour spokesperson stated that all complaints are thoroughly assessed in accordance with the party's rules and procedures.
Duncan-Glancy stepped down as the party's education spokesperson in December and will leave the Scottish Parliament in May, citing her past friendship with Morton as a "serious error of personal judgment".
In December, she admitted to maintaining contact with Morton after his 2017 conviction, which has been widely criticized.
The Daily Record has since reported that Duncan-Glancy continued her friendship with Morton even after he was jailed for additional offenses and that he attended her birthday party late last year.
Morton was sentenced to two 16-month prison terms in January of last year, which were backdated to May 2024, after pleading guilty to possessing indecent photographs of children and breaching his sexual offenses order.

GB men’s curling team suffers upset defeat to Italy
At the 2026 Winter Olympics, Great Britain’s men’s curling team mounted a comeback against Italy following a disappointing beginning, ultimately falling short in their inaugural match.
Despite a valiant comeback, Team GB ultimately fell short as Italy held their composure to secure the win in the final end.
A dismal start to the match proved costly for Team GB's men, as they suffered their first defeat of the Winter Olympics at the hands of host nation Italy, despite a spirited fightback in the packed Cortina Curling Stadium.
Following victories in their first two matches, including a win over the Swedish rink that beat them in the gold-medal match four years ago, Team GB entered their second high-profile encounter in as many days in a confident position.
However, a disastrous opening end, in which Italy stole four points, left Team GB trailing and facing an uphill battle in front of a boisterous home crowd.
The British team, currently ranked number one in the world, gradually regained their footing and managed to level the score by the ninth end.
Ultimately, Italy maintained their composure in the final end to emerge victorious, winning 9-7 and adding Team GB to their list of scalps, which already included the Swedes.
"We had to dig deep and play some solid curling, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get us over the line," Team GB lead Hammy McMillan said in an interview with BBC Sport.
With seven wins from nine round-robin matches guaranteeing a spot in the semi-finals, Team GB remains in a strong position, although fewer wins may still be sufficient to advance.
The women's team is set to take to the ice next, facing South Korea in their second match at 13:05 GMT, while the men will return to action on Saturday against the Czech Republic at the same time.
Team GB is at the forefront of curling's technological advancements.
Embracing what sets you apart can be a powerful asset, according to some athletes.

The looks of shock on the faces of Team GB's curlers told the story of a disastrous opening end.
With a stone in play, Mouat attempted a risky shot in an effort to claim two points, but it backfired, resulting in none of Team GB's stones in the house and four Italian stones in position.
However, the Scottish quartet, ranked number one in the world, quickly regained their composure and got back to their game.
The teams exchanged singles before a impressive final throw by Mouat, aided by a measurement to determine which stone was closest to the button, allowed Team GB to claim two points and narrow the gap to 5-3.
Another excellent team effort, which included a well-judged throw by Mouat, a solid sweep by Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie, and Grant Hardie's strategic expertise, forced Italy to concede a point in the fourth end, reducing the deficit to a single point at the break.
Italy blanked the sixth end and added two points in the seventh to rebuild their lead, but Team GB fought back with two points of their own, remarkably levelling the score with one end remaining after a steal.
The match came down to the final end, but Italy held their nerve to secure the win, prompting a deafening roar from the crowd.
"It's an incredible experience, and we need to get used to it," McMillan added, describing the electric atmosphere as "surreal" and "cool," more akin to a football match than a typical curling crowd.
